Wolf Totem I Chapter 18 I Bilji confronts Ghen Chen
Bilji visits Ghen Chen a month after he began raising wolf. When Bilji tries to have a look at wolf, Ghen stops and tells him he is going to continue to raise it. Bilji taken aback by the shock roars against this stupidity and cruelty of raising their god like animal as a slave which has never happened in so long history of Mongolians. That too by the hands of an youngster from China. Ghen fears Bilji might order him to him and that’s exactly what Bilji said.
Now rather than disrespecting his master who taught him all about Mongolians, culture, tengger, wolves, grassland, Ghen explains reasons behind his quest to raise wolf. Unlike what Bilji accused, Ghen reassured it is him that is a slave to wolf. And continued to lists facts about how rest of the generation and government officials would destroy wolves which will eradicate grassland shepherds and grassland itself.
So, it is important to understand wolves is what Ghen arrives at the discussion. Bilji seems to understand yet not supportive tells him to ensure the leader Baavo shunghai agrees to it and fellow shepherds too.
At when Maavo arrives with Ulji to meet Bilji and the wolf. They get excited seeing the well grown wolf and plans to raise more wolf pubs in future just to kill them and make them into coats and dresses. For which Ghen is clearly against but somehow persuades the leader to raise it. He tells the leader that with this wolf he will breed new breed vettai dogs hunting dogs which we can use for our security reasons., somewhere to find a way to let them live, so the culture, so the land, so the people.
Finally gets proper approval that this risk of raising wolf is for experimentation. Though he is happy and all, Bilji and Ulji warns him about the possibility of the wolves behaviour which might kill other goats, dogs, cows or even Ghen. And most importantly the wolves mom will definitely find her kid someday to destroy his area and cattle.
With an alarming news and a happy news, Ghen cuddles the roaring wolf pub into his hands and the wolf sleeps tightly in his arms.
